Carpet Cleaning Done Naturally

I have a big dog. And three young kids. And a husband (God love him) who gardens and keeps bees and chickens. My carpets are downright gross much of the time, and I have really struggled with finding a balance between keeping my carpets clean and using the chemicals which I thought were necessary to clean them.

I (finally) came up with a solution, and it's one that uses only natural ingredients but also cleans well enough to make this green mama happy.

Here's what you'll need:
Liquid castille soap
Hydrogen peroxide
Container to mix ingredients
Spoon to mix ingredients

The process:
Mix one part castille soap with two parts peroxide in the mixing container. Either pour it onto the carpet stain or put the mixture into a spray bottle. (For my toughest stains I've been pouring it straight on, but know that it takes much, much longer to scrub all the soap back out of the carpet if you go this route.)
Carpet stain before application of cleaner:
Pouring cleaner directly onto stain:

Fizzing goodness- apparently dog pee makes this stuff fizz like crazy. Eeeewwwww...
Scrub, scrub, scrub...
Scrub some more. Did I mention that pouring the cleaner directly onto the stain is great for stain-fighting power, but may require you to cancel evening plans in favor of... scrubbing?
When you think you're done- scrub some more.
Eventually you'll be done and... voila! Perfect carpet, and your whole room will smell nice if you use a scented castille soap, as I do. (OK, so the carpet is still wet in this photo, but there is no more stain- and that's the important part.)

It will look beautiful and be perfect until your kids and dog come back into the house.

Does anyone have any good tips for keeping carpets looking lovely once you've invested the time and energy into cleaning them?

  3. Nikki, I honestly don't know. I have never had a problem, and I've used this method for months on our greyish-purple, dark brown and cream carpets. (Freaky colors, huh?) I'd love to know about the dish soap and vinegar idea- but it calls for Dawn, right? I like to stay away from the petroleum-based products, if I can.

  4. after putting you liquid on the stain, place a wet towel over it and press a hot iron over it. Check every 10 seconds and keep the iron moving to avoid burning the carpet.

  7. You could also rinse with 50/50 vinegar water mixture either by had blotting or in a spot machine or carpet cleaner to rinse out all of the soap. Over time the soap will attract dirt.

  11. Just plain hydrogen peroxide works great - no scrubbing - just spray(or pour) it on - cover with a rag or towel and blot and the stain will come out of the carpet and go into the towel. and no soap to attract dirt.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I try not to use the chemical-heavy brands on the market, since many of the upholstery "protectors" have been linked with cancer. Even if it takes a little longer to scrub by hand, I think I'd rather do that!

  13. Use less Soap. Dr. B's is highly concentrated and you don't need as much as if you were using "regular" dish soap. with less soap you will not scrub as long.

  21. I was wondering if using peroxide and baking soda would work on animal stains and other stains on carpet. I know that using peroxide and baking soda to clean stains on mattresses really works great. I have small grand-kids and some time they have accidents leaky diapers and juice cups. And have used this and has worked really well. You just let air dry and vacuum, stains gone. I think I will try it.

  22. Nice one...but vinegar/water solution is not the solution. It only helps reduce the smell. You need a strong disinfectant and deodorant. The pet stains are very strong and deep. Try high quality stain remover or bleach. But them Bleach can de colour you rugs and carpet. I suggest taking some professional help. The carpet cleaning Houston

  36. This stuff works well. I had all kinds of spots that had been treated with other cleaners which never took the stains away. These stains were very old. I put about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide and a drop of castles in spray bottle to use on stains. The stains are gone now.
