40 Ways to Distract a Toddler

As a homeschooling mom there are times when I want to include every member of my family in an activity, and there are other times when I need to distract the younger set so that I can practice a particular skill with my oldest. But you know, that can be tough with two toddlers running around.

Here are some of the strategies that work well with my daughters when I need to devote some attention to schooling their brother. I try to have several examples from the following list on-hand at all times to pull from when necessary. I hope they help your family as much as they do mine! Want more inspiration? Check out my Toddler Ideas Board on Pinterest.

(Please supervise your young child at all times, and use your best judgement when choosing activities which are safe and appropriate for your child's readiness level.)

Note: If you can only see a few items on the list, please click here for a text-only version of the post. I'm not sure what the problem is, but this seems to help!

1. Rice/bean bins. All you need is a bin, some rice or beans, and some scoops or cups. (I use an under-the-bed storage tub because I actually store mine under a bed, and because that way it's long enough for multiple children to use at once.) These require close supervision for really young children, so I set mine up right next to the table I'm working at so the young kids are always in sight. And may I mention that I strongly prefer beans to rice? You see, beans vacuum and sweep up easily while rice just gets blown every which way.

2. Water bins/tables. These require a nice day and a deck...smile... but are great. Again, fill up a tub with water and provide scoops, bowls, and a few fun trinkets (some that float and some that sink) and let kids play 'til their heart's content. Add a few drops of food coloring for extra fun! Accept before you begin that each child who plays will require a full wardrobe change. I actually use this one a lot while I'm making dinner- the kids are going into the bath at that point anyway, right? Please use your best judgement when allowing young children to engage in water play and ensure close supervision at all times.

3. Paint with water books. Yes, they still exist and yes, they are still a great way to get some exploration going with less than half the mess of the full-fledged version.

4. Puzzles. Use the manufactured variety or try making your own by cutting up pictures your child (or a sibling) has drawn.

5. Special Play Boxes. The idea is that you only take these special boxes of toys out when you are homeschooling another child. These are special treats. Change them up every few weeks or so depending upon your younger child’s interests. Here, my youngest daughter is playing with matchbox cars as I work with her brother.

6. Stickers. On paper, on clothes, on favorite chairs...

7. Number Wheels. Print a color wheel and ask kids to place the corresponding clothes pin on the wheel. For details, check out Money Saving Mom's post here. If your child isn't ready for numbers yet, try putting colors onto the wheel and colored dots on the clothes pins for kids to match. If your child is really young, try just giving them clothes pins with a variety of things/materials to attach them to.

8. Legos and blocks. These are great all by themselves, but can also be used in conjunction with props like dolls, cars, shoeboxes and paper towel rolls. What can kids make with them?

9. Tweezers and pom poms. Provide some multi-colored craft pom poms and ask kids to sort by size or color. If the child is still very young, take away the tweezers and give them a yogurt container with a small hole cut in the top to stuff pom poms through. When they are done, open the container and start again.

10. Toddler sewing basket.  For instructions on how to assemble one of these babies, go here, to Childhood 101.

11. Pipe cleaners in containers. This is a variation of the pom pom suggestion: cut several small holes in a yogurt or coffee container and ask the child to stick pipe cleaners into them. For added challenge, color hole-reinforcers (like you use in three-hole-punched documents) and ask the child to match the pipe cleaner color to the hole reinforcer color.

12. Magazine scavenger hunts.  Really young kids can just rip up the pages, but slightly older toddlers can search through pages to find items you ask for, like pictures of smiles, flowers, a Mommy, etc.

13. Alphabet or picture tracing sheets. This is as easy as laminating an alphabet practice sheet and providing dry erase markers. All done? Wipe and start again.

14. Egg cartons filled with plastic colored eggs. Fill these eggs with little trinkets that will make noise in the eggs. This is enough for young kids. For slightly older kids you can ask them what they hear in the eggs, then have them open the eggs on their own to see if they were correct. (Be careful of very small items for very young children.)

15. Play-Doh filled balloons. You never know what a child is going to create with these, but the sensory experience is the major boon. For details, go here.

16. Pool Noodle Stringing. Cut up pool noodles and provide yarn for little kids to string together.

17. Magnetic Magazine Face-Making. Cut out eyes, ears, mouths, noses, etc. from magazines, laminate, and adhere to magnets. Then, provide your toddler with a magnetic surface to rearrange faces. For details from The Iowa Farmer's Wife, go here.

18. Lacing boards. These can be made with leftover cereal boxes, or can be purchased. You punch several holes along the outline of a shape, and ask your toddler to weave shoestring in and out of the holes. Don't expect perfection unless you are giving instructions- just let them do it on their own.

19. Felt Face-Making. Same idea as above, but you use felt to create facial features and let little hands assemble the faces as they will. This idea can be adjusted to fit any theme you're working on in your homeschool with just a little forethought. Cupcakes, ice cream cones, firetrucks, fish... the list goes on and on. Just create one large, major shape and provide lots of smaller shapes to adorn the large one.

20. Soda bottle filled with glitter, oil, and water. Grab a two-liter and fill it with these ingredients for fun. Roll them, shake them and put them into containers. Remember to glue the cap on before you give this to your child!

21. Button Snake. Tie or sew a button onto a piece of ribbon and provide felt scraps to thread onto the "snake." For details, go here.

22. Clothesline Play. String up a pretend clothesline and provide a few socks, some felt clothes cut-outs, a few scarves, etc. plus a few clothespins and let younger kids have fun hanging up the wash.

23. Bathtub painting. Let a squirmy toddler paint in the bathtub with tempra or other washable paint. Just strip them down and let them go to town, then use the shower head to rinse it all (including what's on their bodies) down the drain. Use your best judgement when it comes to supervising your child in the water (which you will need to use when you're cleaning up the masterpiece).

24. Ziplock bag painting. Fill a bag with paint and tape it up to a glass surface. For details, go here.

25. Giving babydolls a bath. This isn't so gender-specific as you may think. You might be surprised at how many boys enjoy a small tub of water, plastic baby doll, towels and soap. This is another activity which may require a full wardrobe change, but is well-worth the effort.

26. Stamping. Ink pad, paper and a variety of stamps. Check out my tutorial on how to make foam stickers into stamps here.

27. Color scavenger hunt. Give your child a paper bag with a color scribbled on the front, or a colored bag, and ask them to run around the house until they find items of that color to put in the bag. You should also *ahem* set some limits as to what can, and cannot, go in the bag.
(Image from Home Learning From Birth)

28. Bottles and cap matching. Take a bunch of used bottles (washed, of course) and let children match the caps to the bottles. Added bonus? This is a self-correcting activity, so when they get to the end and all the caps don't match, they know they've made a mistake and can go back to find it. Want details? Click here.

29. Rubberband/shoebox guitars. These are fun to play, and fun to make. Just a couple of shoeboxes with rubber bands around them create music (but not too loud) and lots of opportunity for exploration.

30. Give them "work." Give your younger child the same worksheet you give your older child and see what they do with it! The more authentic and identical the worksheet, the better.

31. Pudding/Yogurt fingerpainting. This is another activity which necessitates prompt bathing (boy, I have a lot of those), but gives you peace of mind while you work with another student that your child won't be ingesting paint. Tools like spoons and paintbrushes only add to the fun.

32. Cutting practice.  While themed printables are fun, you don't need anything that fancy. Just draw some wiggly lines across a page and ask your older toddler to cut the marks you've made.

33. PlayDoh prints. My kids will play with Play Doh for hours anyway, but they're especially intrigued by anything that makes a print in the soft dough (think Legos, sporks, beaded necklaces, cookie cutters and little truck wheels).

34. Sorting. Colored pasta, old keys, nuts and bolts. You name it, kids can sort it.

35. Balloons. They don't even need helium- just blow them up and provide a pool noodle for hitting, or tie bunches of them up with a bunch of ribbon and let your kids try to keep them in the air. Try giving kids a straw and having them blow their balloons around the room.
(Please note: use your best judgement when using balloons around young children as popped balloons pose a serious choking hazard.)
36. Water transfer. This can be done with pipettes and small bowls of water, or with small pitchers. The key here is small amounts of water. Colored water is extra exciting.

37. Chalk. It's versatile- if you have a chalkboard that's great, but chalk can be used on black construction paper, on driveways and sidewalks if you're outside, on rocks, on felt...

38. Masking tape obstacle course. You can tailor this to meet your child's needs- put down a straight line and ask your child to walk/hop/skip along it. Create squares they must use to jump between, even adhere tape to the walls in a hallway and tell your child to try to go below the lines you've put up.

39. Pattern Blocks. The idea is to use a set of blocks and ask your child to create the same patterns with the blocks that appear on a form. This can be done by tracing blocks you already have, or by purchasing a set like this one.

40. Give up. Really. When all else fails: skip school for the time being and give your babies the attention they need. I've seldom regretted calling it quits on a tough school day to give us all a chance to regroup, but I have often regretted not doing so. Realize that you aren't a superhuman and there is nothing so important that should make you ignore a young child who wants and needs you.

    1. BEWARE OF THESE SCAMS!!! DR TANASIA JOBS IS THE ONLY SPELL CASTER TO TRUST!( tanasiajobs210@gmail.com) will be of great help to you.
I never believed in spell casting but After 4 years of dating my hobby, he left me because I lost my womb . I felt like my life has come to an end, I almost committed suicide, i was emotionally down for a very long time. Thanks to the spell caster called Dr Tanaisa whom i met online after my friend Tracy told me about how he helped her. She testified about how Dr Tanasia brought back her Ex in less than 3 days and reversed the effect of her lost womb, and at the end of her testimony she dropped Dr Tanaisa's email address. I decided to give Dr Tanaisa a try. I contacted her via email and explained my problems to her. In just 3 days, my Hubby came begging. We resolved our issues, and we are even happier than before, am pregnant now to God be the glory. Dr Tanaisa is really a gifted woman and i will not stop publishing her because she is a wonderful woman... Come to think of it I didn't pay much and all I have to do is send her little 250 dollars which he used in providing the materials used for the spell. Even my pastor said that God works mysteriously, that some women are used by God to help others. If you have a problem and you are looking for a real and genuine spell caster to solve all your problems for you. Contact Dr Tanaisa anytime, she is the answer to your problems. 9. Great ideas, thanks, but one note, balloons are not safe for toddlers, they are one of the biggest choking hazards. When they pop they create little pieces that perfectly block a child's airway. Even worse the color of many of the balloons (red/purple/blue) makes it really hard for a doctor or paramedic to distinguish between the child'd tissues and the balloon, making them really difficult to remove in an emergency.

  14. Terrific ideas! Wish I'd had these when my boys were young!

Just a note on the water activity with toys floating in water in a storage bin. Toddlers have drowned in a bucket of water by falling in head first. So parents should be sure to always supervise when kids have a bin of water.

  18. excellent ideas. i can certainly use them with my kids. I have a toddler and a preschooler. My tot will just throw tantrums anywhere. It's just that sometimes he get to my nerves. But when I look at him. I can't stay mad long. By the way, I certainly love the color scavenger hunt ideas. I'm sure he will love that. My son also likes singing children's songs. It works for him. 20. Thank you so much for all the wonderful ideas. As a homeschool mom myself, I have always just put a movie on for my younger ones, but then that distracts the older ones. :)
Another fun thing, shaving cream on the floor or a desk and let your child draw in it with their fingers. Make sure they don't eat it though.. eww!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Darcy, my youngest is an "eater"- this is good when it's dinner time, not so good when it's craft time. I can totally see her chowing down on a bit of shaving cream. (And yet I think I'll still try it...!)

      Delete
    2. This could also be one of those bath tub activities, to help contain the shaving cream... and you could also incorporate your homeschooler, depending on the age. Have them spell words (or do simple math problems or whatever) on the walls and have a little water in the tub to wash it off with a washcloth.

      Delete
    3. Oh, I can see it, Jamie. Especially since those foam letters stick so well on bathtub walls when they're wet...

      Delete
    4. You can always use whip cream instead of shaving cream if you are worried about them eating it, but it will melt if it is too hot.

      Delete
    5. I've never heard of a kid who didn't love a little whipped cream play...

      Delete
    6. I know I'm REALLY late to this party, but I'm reading it now, so others will be too. ;)
Another good idea with the shaving cream is to squirt it onto the outside of your windows. The kids can have a good play, draw pictures etc and when they're done, you hose it off. As an added bonus, it's great for cleaning the windows!

  22. Be careful with dry beans around toddlers, who may stick them up their nose or in their ears. You could end up in the emergency room to get the beans extracted. Also, matchbox cars are clearly marked "not for children under 3 years" because the small wheels and other parts can come off and become a choking hazard. Several of these ideas would only be appropriate for three years and older, not for toddlers.

    1. Hi, and thanks for the concern. As with so many things in life, choices about ways to entertain our children are very individual, and what might work for one child may or may not work for another. As such, I put a blanket statement at the top of the post reminding parents to supervise their children at all times and to choose activities which are safe and appropriate for their specific situation. I also mention specific safety concerns in many individual idea discussions. For me, using bean bins and matchbox cars while I'm next to my kids is a reasonable choice, but others may not feel that way. This post was intended to help parents generate some ideas which may work for their kids, and I encourage parents choose wisely for their families!

  42. After having taught nursery school for years, I still go a bit boggly at the idea of gender-specific activities, like washing dolls, with young kids. Kids who like it will like it, kids who don't won't like it. Even if one wants to argue that it's mostly girls who like dolls, or mostly boys who like trucks, and some will, it's unfair to just assume any kid won't like it, until we know, and unfair to disallow kids activities because we gender the activities.

It's not more complicated than that.

  46. just wanted to add a suggestion with the tub of water for outdoor play - I used to do daycare and we spent a lot of time playing in water. One of the favorite activities was just using inexpensive paint brushes with the water. No food coloring necessary. The kids would paint the sidewalks, letters of the alphabet, etc. Sometimes we would use small containers to throw the water to do "splash" art. So much fun for hours with no cost!

You see, my own children are grown but I am getting do-over opportunities with my friend's little ones (while waiting for my own grandbabies to arrive)! Thank God for them because pinterest has so many fun and wonderful ideas I just had to try. During a recent visit with a 2 year old and a 7 year old we used those window clings. They not only had a great time clinging to house windows but also to windows in the car on a lengthy car ride. Going to borrow some of your ideas on future visits. Thanks for the awesome ideas

  49. Just a suggestion....I would use a much more shallow tub for the water (think something they could actually crawl out of). The one shown is far too deep, much like a bucket and a toddler can fall into it ( head first) and not have the strength to pull him/herself out.
EVEN with a much more shallow tub, never EVER leave a toddler alone ( they can drown in just 5 inches of water)even for just a "minute".
I understand there is a warning already posted....but I just felt the need to REALLY stress this.

  67. As an early childhood professional, I suggest changing the title of this post to 40 ways to engage a toddler. Using the word "distract" is disrespectful to your toddler and devalues who s/he is and what s/he is capable of. Toddlers are learning through the opportunities to investigate and explore that you are offering. Many of these ideas are wonderful and it is great to see that so many of your followers are excited to engage their toddlers as well. I would recommend 2 things though. Try to keep the materials you offer your young children as open-ended as possible. This means that the "face" activities don't need to be faces...they could be any shape at all. Also, there is no point to providing worksheets to children as a learning tool. The basics of reading and writing are not developed in this way. Instead use modeling and conversation with your little ones to scaffold and support their meaning-making around the uses of print and the conventions of their language.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Such a rude comment. No point to providing worksheets? Sure there is; it's called development of fine motor skills with the use of a crayon. Then there is the psychological development that happens with a younger child emulates an older sibling. And so on. The purpose of this list (if you'd read closely) is how to keep children engaged when Mom or Dad is working with another child on school work, thus the choice of the word "distraction." It would be disrespectful of a parent to ignore, rather than to provide distracting activities, for a child who is waiting his or her turn for Mommy's undivided attention. You entirely missed the point of the post. This list is not about sharing "learning tools" (although nearly every activity IS one which provides development of skills); it is about providing independent-play activities. As an "early childhood professional," it would be of benefit to you to start learning from Mom's and Dad's and put less emphasis on your text-book knowledge. Experience is priceless.

  73. I raised my children using the Montessori method, and most of these activities are home-made versions of Montessori activities (home-made is always better!!) Now, raising my 17 mo old granddaughter, I see that the tried-and-true activities from my day are still the BEST. Forget about store-bought toys and invest in creativity. It just can't be beat! (This morning, my baby "sorted" the little pieces of orange peel I gave her after she'd eaten an orange for her snack. She dropped them into a yogurt cup with an opening cut into the lid, poured them out, etc. Kept her happy while I got the breakfast mess cleaned up and lunch prepped.

I am here to testify to the good work of Dr Kamachu. 2 years ago my husband left home, he never returned, no phone calls, no letters, no emails, no sign of him anywhere. my daughter got sick so ill, things were so tough for me. I had lost hope, on that process, i met a psychic, he said he would help me, i paid over $3000 and still nothing happened, i lost hope completely, my daughter situation got worse each day. Last month, i saw a posting concerning the good works of the Traditional Centre, i gave him a try...i paid about $800 for all three spells (Bring Lover back, Healing spell and Career spells) In a matter of weeks, my husband called me and told me he was sorry and that he wants to come back to me and he would explain everything when he comes back, three days later, i got a new job with a good company, right now, my daughter's condition is getting better each day and i trust she would be well in a matter of days.I want to thank DR Kamachu you can contact his temple on his email:traditionalspellcentre@gmail.com

I am Cindy Ivan from United Kingdom, Scotland, I did not believe in Love spell magic for i thought and believed it was not real until the day that my boyfriend left me for one Girl, I tried all my possible means to get him back to me but it all seems to be in vain, So one day i saw a testimony on the INTERNET about DR OVIA how he helped one Man to get his wife back, although i didn't believe in love spell, i contacted him because i loved my Boyfriend and i want him back, So DR OVIA performed the love spell and told me to wait for just 12 hours which i did, So surprisingly, My Boyfriend sent me an apologizing Text and he started begging me, from that day, we became together and up till now, We are in love with each other like never before.. If you need any help, You can as well contact DR OVIA on this Valid Emails ( droviasolutioncenter@gmail.com or droviasolutioncenter@yahoo.com) You can also call him on +2348054049995 or contact him directly Via His Website http://droviasolutioncenter.webs.com/
